Heraklion is a major seaport and ferry dock, which gives a lot of options for travelers going to explore the region. There are also several daily ferries to Piraeus, the port of Athens in mainland Greece.
Staying in Heraklion is also one of the best ways to discover the Greek culture. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the great museums of Greece and one of the best in the world in terms of the Minoan civilization of Crete. Knossos Palace, located on the outskirts of Heraklion, is the largest site of archaeological Bronze Age Crete and one of the major tourist attractions of Greece. Archana, a wonderful small town located in Heraklion, recently received second prize for the most traditional people in Europe and has become a must for tourists in Greece.
Heraklion is also plenty of places where you can relax and enjoy simpler times past. In the community of Hersonissos, find Irish pubs and Dutch. At the eastern end of it is a tourist complex with restaurants and shops. There is plenty to do there for children, with areas of slides, games and swimming pools. The Aquaworld Aquarium with local marine life and reptiles is a great success for children and adolescents.
