Heraklion Prefecture & Town
Crete whose capitol is Heraklion is the southernmost land mass in Greece and consequently has the longest growing and tourism season. Heraklion prefecture, is named after the island's capital city Heraklion, and receives more tourism than the other three provinces of Crete put together. Heraklion is Crete's biggest prefecture and city.
Heraklion is the most likely port of entry to Crete either by sea or by air and is for good reason. The Heraklion Archeology Museum and the ancient Minoan site of Knossos discovered by Sir Arthur Evans.
Heraklion Town consists of an old and new town with the old being mostly concentrated along the harbor area with extensive fortress walls and massive port facilities.
Near by, mostly to the east on the northern coast are many resorts within the prefecture most notably within the Chersonisos area. Here you will also find the most modern and European roads on the island.
There are several other Minoan sites in the provence such as Phaistos and near to it on the south coast several nice beaches including famous Mattala beach with its attendant caves.
