Crete is a very handy place to have an automobile and of course a good map. Many Maps of Greece and of Crete are availble upon arrival. Guide books too. To really tour the whole island one needs 2 to 3 weeks by car.

You sure could see a lot in a couple of days with a car however and really European class highways exist between Herakion and Aghios Nocolau.

Other roads you'll find are coastal and/or winding transitioning to swtichbacks while climbing and decending geographical features.
