Yacht Charter in Southern Crete
In the summer the prevailing wind is the infamous Meltemi NW – WNW. July and August sees the winds at their strongest, force 5-6 on the north coast but more often a softer force 3-4. Spring and autumn arrives with a southerly winds, force 2-4. The southern coast is notorious for strong squalls hit the mountains. There is little in the way of warning and can be violent near the coast. It is very hot on the island during the summer months with average daily temperature reaching 35 º C in July and August and temperatures as high as 40 ° C are not uncommon.
Nisis Gramvousa found off the coast of Crete S. There is no protected bay in the SE part of the island. Yachts can anchor in the bay or go to the pier arches. There are no facilities but water is available from side to side and hood
Palaiokhora is near the southwestern tip of Crete. Go alongside or bow or stern in the new port on the E side of the rocky point. Or anchor in either of the two bays of the E and W Cape depending on the direction of the winds. There is water and fuel in the village and all provisions can be obtained. The tavernas here are good.
There are anchors on both Ak Mouros sides. Ormos Loutra to E, where a boat can anchor the village and Ormos Foinikias to W. There are few taverns and limited provisions are available in town.
In connection with the W is Skafion. Yachts can anchor of the village in calm weather. There are tavernas ashore and all provisions can be found. The small town once now is a booming resort
In Ay Galini yachts can go bow or stern or along the waterfront. There is good maintenance on the sandy bottom and shelter from the Meltemi. There is water on the quay and fuel in the city. All provisions are available and there are good pubs. Another recently developed tourist resort.
Matala is a bay shaped like a horseshoe on the W side of Ak Latinos. Yates only use in good weather. Most provisions are available and there are good tavernas ashore. Matala mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. Menelau Here the ships were wrecked returning from the Trojan War. It was an important port in Roman times.
Kali Lima is a small Bay on the E side of Ak lithia. Yachts can anchor in the bay at depths of 3-6 feet. Not a good shelter from the N and W, but is open to the E and S. Limited provisions can be found in the village and there are few taverns.
Lerapetrais medium-sized port. Yachts can go bow or stern to the N or W sides. Water on the quay and fuel of the city. All provisions are available and there are good tavernas overlooking the sea. The port city and date to the Minoan times but sadly little of the ancient architecture maintained.
Yachts can anchor in the bay of Kato Zakros large arena. There are a couple of tavernas ashore, but the main attraction are the ruins of a Minoan palace at the foot of the impressive canyon.
Ormos Grandes is a large bay on the N side of Ak Plaka. Yachts can seek shelter from the Meltemi in Kouremenos in the N of the bay. 2 miles N of Kouremenos is Vai. Here yachts can anchor the sand beach and there are taverns ashore.
Cretan cuisine is similar to that found in the Aegean Sea. Fish plays an important role in the form of tuna, swordfish, sea bass, sea urchins, octopus, squid and cuttlefish. You will find beef, pork, lamb and goat. A stew of rabbit is a specialty. As cheesecake and fried cheese (STAKES). For the sweet tooth try yogurt and honey cakes (kaltzounia). Cretan wine is pretty good.
