Ten Greek islands

The form of the Greek Islands one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Europe. More than 1400 separate islands are distributed in the Ionian, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas and constitute a fifth of the land mass of Greece. The influx of tourism has had different effects on different islands with some happily running along with the demands of modern tourism enforce, while others have been more cautious and are now reaping the rewards of not succumbing to excessive development. These are the beautiful islands and many retain the original charm of the historical culture of great wrapped up among the fertile forest areas, and spectacular coastal scenery Charming village life.

Corfu was my first experience of the Greek islands, twenty five years now. In those days, the preferences are full of action to the beach side holiday with younger colleagues and Corfu, did not disappoint. These days the island continues to fulfill that need, but in a way more sophisticated and offers Corfu town cosmopolitan experience for those who need more than sun and sand.

Ninth in my top ten list is another Ionian island. Zakynthos, despite having a wealth of history behind it, is almost an island in terms of new construction. In 1953 he took the brunt of a major earthquake which was centered nearby and almost all buildings on the island were destroyed. There was some minor loss of life, but flimsy construction techniques met last year and during the last fifty years the island has been undergoing a major reconstruction program. The poorer elements of this are still in specific hotel developments of the seventies, but now dispersed throughout the building is tightly controlled from a perspective of stability and aesthetics. I'll go back to the Ionian Islands later with a more favored option.

Crete is the eighth ranked for me and is the largest of all Greek islands. Than occupations has been negligent in its past of the Turks and by Nazi Germany during World War II, but the Cretans are resilient and have the word difficult to maintain their own culture. For all the poor of the tourist areas of Crete, there are some spectacular sights and so it can function. Most are like some their areas of secluded beach and tranquil as Xerokampos hidden in the southeast corner of the island. Quiet, peaceful and untouched by mass tourism, which defines the escape-from-it-all beach dream we all want. The Samaria Gorge walk, although popular with visitors, all should be so experienced.

Below are Rhodes, an island near Turkey, Greece. Again, this is a large island that has ruined their sights such as Faliraki, but the places of culture and beauty are never too far. The Street of the Knights of Rhodes in the Old City takes visitors back to the days when the Knights of the Order of St. John bought the island from pirates.

Eighty miles north of Crete is the volcanic island of Santorini in the Cyclades. The island's crescent-shaped, can be reached only by boat and, if at cruise, a donkey ride or hike a trail steep cliff of the town of Thira. Another victim of an earthquake in 1956, has been rebuilt Thira terraced white houses perched high on the cliffs. Interior of the island has charming villages and a magnificent black sand beach in Kamari.

Fourth and fifth are the two of the island of Naxos and Paros, the main islands in the center of the Cyclades group. They have these mountain villages, picturesque fishing ports and beaches combined scanning with a history of settlements dating back 5000 years.

My Greek island Leros rated third best. Less known and quieter for it, has the same beautiful beaches and inland forests of others without feeling restless meddling tourism.

Preferable to both Naxos and Paros is the nearby island of Mykonos, the island's popular because of this group in the Aegean. Classified as an island of well-educated upper classes, try to keep that museums and galleries everywhere. The beaches are spectacular in places like Platys Gialos.

Finally, here is the island I love most. It may not be the choice of everyone, but for the beauty, peace and relaxation Combined with an interesting mixture of history and culture Kythira has it all. The reason for this island is so quiet is that many residents left to emigrate to Australia, perhaps for fear of more earthquakes in the 1950s. A renovated airport and a new port to get here a little easier and the mix of stunning beaches, coves tranquil and lush valleys really sexy.
