Travel to Thassos, Greece and forget the stresses of everyday life
Tasos is 12 kilometers from the mainland of northern Greece and is a popular destination holiday for residents of mainland Greece. It is, however, not so popular as to become heavily during high season, as some of the most famous Greek islands as Corfu and Crete.
The sense of serenity and solitude is never far away and is definitely a place for those who want to relax and unwind from the stress of everyday life.
The landscape of the Island can not be dramatic, but it's a very pretty island, but the nickname of the "Emerald Isle" is unfortunately now is not exactly well as forest fires have been common to many green areas. But do not let this put out of this wonderful destination, as it has done more enough to return to beautiful sandy beaches and fascinating Hellenistic ruins.
The capital of the island of Thassos is the city on the northeast coast and is the main port of the island. It was built atop the ruins of the ancient city of Thassos, which at the height of its glory ordered the lucrative trade links with such distant empires such as Egypt and Persia. The ruins of this ancient city are scattered around the modern solution and is easy to spend a few hours watching these glimpses walk of a glorious past. To view more on the islands the past history of the Archaeological Museum displays many and well worth a few hours, even if just to escape the sun!
Most visitors to the island of Thassos leave town fast enough to make its way to the coast and the transport network linking the city with almost every village of the island. The east coast of the island has few beaches and some attractive Aegean peoples and traditional. Panagia and Potamia are favorites of visitors to Thassos and its slopes establishment offer stunning views of the island and the coast.
The not-so-originally named Golden Beach is a long strip of sand and is easily the best on the island. The road down of the two hillside villages is nice and not too much of a strain, although a regular bus route making.
Paradise Beach is further south and if it is not as picturesque as Golden Beach is much quieter and is a great place to relax and unwind from the hustle limited Thassos Town. The view from this little island and the easily accessible cliffs are magnificent and there is a small archaeological site nearby as well.
The west coast of Thassos is probably more active than the east coast with views over package to discover the area every year. The beaches on this coast are more exposed and composed mainly of stones in place sand as on the opposite side of the island. There are few beautiful villages along the coast and they have all stepped wonderful cobbled streets and stone houses. A couple of them, as Skala and Skala Rahoniou
Marion beaches have little and are starting to attract the development of large resorts. Limenaria on the south coast is the second city on the island and is a popular tourist destination with a narrow sandy beach which can get very busy in the summer. About 15 kilometers from the city is the village of Theologos which was the capital of the island under Turkish occupation and effortlessly most beautiful Thassos. Its whitewashed houses and narrow streets yet undiscovered by mass tourism and when you walk through the streets can not help feeling you've found your own little piece of traditional Greek island life!
There are a few hotels in each of the settlements from the beach, but the most developed area is largely in the west coast and is where most tourists are in agreement package. More and more people are hiring holiday villas for your visit with a rental car is easy to explore the island.
Ferries to the island are regular Kavala on the mainland. Kavala lies 100 kilometers east of Thessaloniki, where an international airport. Buses to Kavala from Thessaloniki are fairly regular and this is the only way to reach the island because there is no airport in Thassos itself.
Greece's currency is the euro, which is divided into 100 cents.
